Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine is one of approximately 1,300 Asama shrines in Japan that enshrine the deity of volcanoes in general and Mount Fuji in particular. The shrine is part of the Mt. Fuji UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, designated in 2013.
Asama shrines are dedicated to Konohanasakuya-hime (“cherry blossom princess”), the goddess of Mt. Fuji and all volcanoes in Japanese mythology. The vast majority of Asama shrines are within sight of Mt. Fuji; where this is not the case because of distance or obstructions, miniature replicas of Mt. Fuji made with rocks from the mountain are erected within the shrine grounds.

Over 1150 years ago, during year 6 of the Jogan era (864 a.d.), Nagaoyama, a flank volcano of Mt. Fuji erupted. The red hot lava flow (Aokigahara Maruo) descended between ancient parasitic volcanoes, creating this two-tunnel type cave. After being designated by the Ministry of Education as a natural monument in 1929, it was introduced to the world as a geological wonder.
By the way, the tree-type lava bed is said to have the most spiracles in the world.

The Fuji Fugaku Wind Cave is surrounded by the abundant greenery of the Aokigahara Jukai forest. Once you enter the cave, it is pleasantly cool even in summer, with an average temperature of 3℃. Up until the beginning of the Showa era, it was used as a refrigerator to store the eggs of silkworms. The cave has also been designated as a Japanese natural monument. The lateral cave is 201m long and 8.7m high, and strangely enough, does not produce an audible echo. This is because its basaltic walls act to absorb the sound. In the course of a 15 minute sight-seeing tour, one can see lava shelves, rope-like lava, and ice pillars that do not melt even in summer.
