Detailed itinerary

Stop 1

The Royal Palace of Naples is a historic building located in Piazza del Plebiscito, in the historic center of Naples, where the main entrance is located: the entire complex, including the gardens and the San Carlo theater, also overlooks piazza Trieste and Trento, Piazza del Municipio and Via Acton.
It was the historical residence of the Spanish viceroys for over one hundred and fifty years, of the Bourbon dynasty from 1734 to 1861, interrupted only for a decade at the beginning of the nineteenth century by the French domination with Giuseppe Bonaparte and Gioacchino Murat, and, following the Italy, of the Savoys [2]: sold in 1919 by Vittorio Emanuele III of Savoy to the state property, it is mainly used as a museum, in particular the Royal Apartments, and is the seat of the national library.
The Royal Palace was built starting in 1600, to reach its final appearance in 1858: numerous architects such as Domenico Fontana, Gaetano Genovese, Luigi Vanvitelli, Ferdinando Sanfelice and Francesco Antonio Picchiatti participated in its construction and related restoration work.

The area on which the gallery stands was already intensely urbanized in the 16th century and was characterized by a tangle of parallel streets connected by short alleys, which from Via Toledo opened out in front of Castel Nuovo. These alleys enjoyed a bad reputation as there were taverns (the infamous tavern of Cagliantese or Cagliantesa) houses of malfeasance and crimes of every kind were consumed. The fame conquered by the area over the centuries, already known to Giambattista Basile who immortalized the women of malfeasance in the place in his work Le muse napolitane, remained for almost the entire nineteenth century.

Stop 3

Castel sant'Elmo is a medieval castle, used as a museum, located on the Vomero hill near San Martino in Naples. It was once called Paturcium and stands in the place where, from the 10th century, there was a church dedicated to Sant'Erasmo (from which Eramo, Ermo and then Elmo).

This mighty building (the first castle by extension of the city), partly derived from living rock (Neapolitan yellow tuff), originates from a Norman observation tower called Belforte. Due to its strategic importance, the castle has always been a coveted possession: from its position (250 m s.l.m.) one can observe the whole city, the gulf, and the roads that from the surrounding hills lead to the city.

The castle, as well as a permanent museum, the "Naples Novecento", is also home to various temporary exhibitions, fairs and events: from 1998 until 2011 during the spring it was the headquarters of the Napoli Comicon (from 2012 moved to the Mostra d'Oltremare ). The castle, owned by the Italian State, since December 2014 is part of the assets managed by the museum complex of Campania. In 2016 he registered 199 233 visitors [2].

Stop 4

Posillipo already appears in the sources of the ancient Greeks, the first to inhabit the promontory then entirely covered by rocks and trees. There are Roman ruins near the banks as well as near the highest point of the hill; it is possible to see the remains of the openings that ventilated the tunnel that led to the residence of Publius Vedio Pollione. The remains of an amphitheater are also present. With the end of the ancient age the population of Naples closed in the fortified walls and the whole area fell into decline, completely prey to the barbarian invasions and neglect.
In modern times, the area remained substantially underdeveloped until the construction of the Via Posillipo between 1812 and 1824. The road begins at the port of Mergellina and extends along the coast, almost parallel to the shore.
Much of the area has been heavily rebuilt following the Second World War, but has preserved several historic buildings, including Villa Rosebery, residence of the President of the Republic [3].
