Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, one of the most characteristic and romantic of old Naples, with its obelisk surmounted by the bronze statue of the saint, surrounded, as in a sumptuous frame, by the great palaces of the Del Balzo family (later inhabited by the famous animator of the Conspiracy of the Barons, Antonello Petrucci), Casacalenda, Corigliano, Sansevero (seat of the di Sangro, the best known of which was Raimondo di Sangro, who was responsible for the embellishment of the famous Sansevero Chapel, notable for its works of art).
The square is the crossroads of the ancient Neapolitan center, where Spaccanapoli meets Mezzocannone, the street of the Universities. From here you go to San Gregorio Armeno, the street of the cribs. Prince Raimondo di Sangro passed through here to reach the nearby laboratory adjacent to the family chapel, inside which the Veiled Christ.

Spaccanapoli is a historic street located in the heart of the ancient center of Naples. Its name derives from the fact that the street seems to "split" the historic center of the city in two.
