The Castle of Nice was a military citadel. Built on top of a hill, it stood overlooking the bay of Nice from the 11th to the 18th centuries. It was besieged several times, most notably in 1543 and 1691, before being taken by French troops in 1705 and finally destroyed in 1706 by order of Louis XIV.

From Tuesday to Sunday, the famous flower market takes its place at the heart of Cours Saleya and sets the pace for mornings in the Vieux Nice. An essential stop for holidaymakers on the Côte d'Azur, the people of Nice have also come here to do their shopping since 1861.
