The Grand Egyptian Museum, located near the Pyramids of Giza, is the largest archaeological museum in the world. Its foundation stone was laid in 2002, and after years of construction and preparation, it is now welcoming visitors with a soft opening before the official grand opening expected in 2025.
The museum covers more than 480,000 square meters and houses over 100,000 ancient Egyptian artifacts, including the entire collection of King Tutankhamun — displayed together for the first time since its discovery.
Designed with modern architecture and panoramic views of the Great Pyramids, the GEM combines ancient history with advanced technology, featuring 3D displays, multimedia presentations, and climate-controlled galleries that protect priceless treasures from Egypt’s past.
After all these wonderful impressions, we finally go to a nice local restaurant for lunch.
We continue to the impressive pyramids of Giza. The Pyramiden of Giza are among the most famous and oldest preserved structures of mankind; they stand on the western edge of the Nile Valley. The Giza pyramid field has been an important cemetery since the 1st Dynasty. The pyramids of Giza were built around 2620 to 2500 BC.
Afterwards we visit the famous Sphinx in Cairo, not far from the Khafre Temple. The Great Sphinx is by far the most famous and largest Sphinx. It depicts a lying lion with a human head and was probably built in the 4th Dynasty around 2520 to 2494 BC. The Sphinx has risen from the sands of the Egyptian desert for more than four millennia. The Sphinx was carved from the remains of a limestone hill that served as a quarry for the Great Pyramiden.
