There are still a few vineyards left in Montmartre, as a reminder that this area was once agricultural. It is also the occasion to celebrate the Montmartre harvest every year, around October, and gather for a festive time.

Stop 8

The café ! After painting all day, it’s tradition to gather all night at the café and especially at the famous cabaret Le Lapin Agile. Originally, the place was called the Cabaret des Assassins - Assassin’s cabaret. The name came, ironically, from the idea that all the “assassins” of the world would gather there to remake society: anarchists, rebels, poets, drunkards, and many more. But in truth, the only things being “killed” here were bourgeois ideas, not people. Then, in 1879, the painter André Gill took over the decoration of the cabaret. He decided to paint a rabbit escaping from a cooking pot. People began to exclaim, “That’s Gill’s Rabbit!” — Le Lapin à Gill! — which, over time, evolved into Le Lapin Agile, meaning “The Nimble Rabbit.

This cabaret greeted artists, libertarians, anarchists and many others that seeked pure air in Montmartre. Monet, Renoir and the impressionists used to spend time there while drinking and re-building the world. Time to enter in their dreams...
