The ideal excursion for a commented introduction to the history of Lozère through 4 emblematic sites around Mende. Discover the history of the place in complete tranquility, leaving the driving and the itinerary to your driver-guide. 1/2 Day of commented discovery (2 p.m.-6 p.m., English/French) of this territory, from prehistoric times to the Second World War. Will we find fossils? Were there Romans in Lozère? What legends have shaped the country? We will visit the blue marl site at Cénaret, the Roman Mausoleum at Lanuéjols, the Hermitage at Mont Mimat and the Rieucros prison camp.
Our first stop at Cénaret allows us to understand the geology and formation of Lozère, there we find rocks called "blue marls" where our many marine fossils have been found. We can venture onto the blue marls.
Noted as "the remains of a Roman tomb which must have been one of the most beautiful monuments there is in France", we will tour the place and you will be able to examine for yourselves that it must indeed have been a building of magnitude during the Gallo-Roman period.
The history linked to the caves under Mont Mimat would be contemporary with the Roman Mausoleum of Lanuéjols. The Hermitage allows us to talk about the beginning of the eventful history of Lozère and Saint Privat, with a magnificent view of Mende.
Centuries have passed and we find ourselves in a dark era in our history, the 2nd World War, of which the Rieucros camp is a very important marker. After discovering the information panels, you can climb to the sculpted rock via a small, fairly steep path.
