En route, stop at the historic fort of Chittorgarh that is synonymous with Rajput valor and pride. Situated on top of a hill, you have to go past seven gateways to reach the fort. The huge fort complex has over 65 built structures, among them 4 palaces, 19 Hindu and Jain temples, 4 memorials and 20 functional water bodies.
Visit the palace of Queen Padmini, which played an important role in Rajput history. It was here that Alauddin Khilji, the then Sultan of Delhi, spotted Queen Padmini’s reflection in a pool of water and was so taken in by her beauty that he waged a war against the Kingdom of Mewar. Following the defeat of the Maharana, Queen Padmini along with hundreds of Rajput women committed jauhar (mass self-immolation) within the fort complex.
