Detailed itinerary

1
Stop 1

Pickup at your hotel, apartment, Airbnb, Athens airport, or Piraeus port.

2

The first visit takes place at the Marathon Run Museum, with thirty to forty minutes available to explore its exhibits. Guests view original Olympic torches, medals, athlete memorabilia, and archival material that explain how the legend of the Marathon race developed from antiquity to modern times. The museum provides a clear, contemporary introduction before entering the archaeological context of Marathon.

3

A short drive leads to the Archaeological Museum of Marathon, where forty-five to sixty minutes are spent examining funerary monuments, pottery, statues, and objects from the wider region. The displays help visitors understand the archaeological background of the area, including material connected to the Battle of Marathon and surrounding sanctuaries.

4

The tour continues with a brief ten to fifteen minute stop at the Tomb of the Athenians, the burial mound honoring the 192 Athenian soldiers who fell in 490 BC. The site is simple and unadorned, offering a quiet moment of reflection.

5

A few minutes away, the next stop offers ten to fifteen minutes to observe the landscape of the Marathon battlefield. Although no ruins remain, the open plain and natural features of the area allow visitors to visualize the scale and strategy of the confrontation between the Athenians and Persians.

6

The route continues south toward the eastern Attica coastline, transitioning gradually from the agricultural Marathon plain to the seaside environment. Passing through Artemida, the tour follows the coastal road with open views of the Aegean Sea. This scenic drive segment offers a relaxed seaside atmosphere and a visual break between the historical sites of Marathon and the sanctuary landscape of Vravrona.

7

The visit at Vravrona lasts sixty to seventy-five minutes and includes both the archaeological site and the on-site museum. Set within a quiet wetland landscape, the sanctuary features the restored stoa, temple foundations, and ritual areas dedicated to Artemis Brauronia. The museum displays statues of young girls, votive offerings, and artifacts connected to ancient rites of passage. The serene atmosphere and refined character of the site offer a strong contrast to the earlier battlefield locations.

8

The tour continues toward Porto Rafti along local roads linking the eastern Attica coast. Lunch is enjoyed in Porto Rafti, a seaside town known for its calm waterfront and traditional tavernas. The stop lasts around one hour to one hour and fifteen minutes, allowing guests to dine comfortably by the sea and relax before the final major site of the day.

9
Stop 9

After lunch, the itinerary proceeds south along the coastal road toward Cape Sounion, passing coves and open stretches of Aegean coastline. The visit to Cape Sounion lasts sixty to seventy-five minutes. Guests explore the Temple of Poseidon, admire panoramic sea views, and take photographs of one of Greece’s most iconic classical monuments. The dramatic cliffside location and open horizon provide a powerful conclusion to the tour.
