After arriving at the meeting point, our licensed guide will lead you toward the Necropolis beneath St. Peter’s Basilica. On the way, you’ll pass through St. Peter’s Square, a breathtaking space designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the 17th century. Its sweeping colonnades, crowned with statues of saints, seem to embrace visitors in welcome. At the center stands the ancient obelisk, a silent witness to centuries of history, including St. Peter’s martyrdom nearby. The grandeur of the Basilica, fountains, and symmetry of the square create a sense of awe as we move toward the sacred Necropolis below, where the earliest Christian tombs and St. Peter’s resting place lie preserved.
With your licensed guide, descend beneath St. Peter’s Basilica to explore the ancient Roman Necropolis, a burial ground from the 1st to 4th centuries AD along the historic Via Cornelia near Vatican Hill. Walking the central funerary path, you’ll see brick mausoleums decorated with frescoes, mosaics, stucco reliefs, and carved sarcophagi. These tombs reflect Roman traditions and early Christian beliefs, offering a rare glimpse into a pivotal era of history. At the heart of the Necropolis lies St. Peter’s burial place, preserved as a sacred site. Around 150 AD, the Trophy of Gaius shrine was built above his tomb. When Emperor Constantine built the first Basilica in 319 AD, the Necropolis was preserved. Sealed for centuries, it was rediscovered during Pope Pius XII’s 1939–1949 excavations, leading to the identification of St. Peter’s remains in 1952.
After your guided tour of the Necropolis of St. Peter, continue independently with an audio-guided tour of St. Peter’s Basilica (if selected) or explore without audio. Marvel at the largest church ever built, a symbol of Christianity worldwide, and explore at your own pace. Discover its stunning architecture, rich history, and masterpieces, including Michelangelo’s dome, Bernini’s bronze Baldachin, the Pietà, and the chapels and grottoes that house papal tombs. Today’s Basilica, built over Constantine’s, reflects the vision of Renaissance Popes who commissioned the greatest artists of their time, including Bramante, Michelangelo, Bernini, and Maderno. Along a path of art, faith, and spirituality, visitors can walk the grand naves, admire magnificent works of art, visit chapels, and descend to the Vatican grottoes to see the tombs of the Popes—an unforgettable experience of history, art, and devotion.
