Drakenstein Prison & The Nelson Mandela Statue
Historical Significance
Drakenstein Prison (formerly known as Victor Verster Prison) is a historic site in South Africa, famous for being the place where Nelson Mandela spent the final 14 months of his imprisonment before his release on 11 February 1990. Located between Paarl and Franschhoek, the prison was a low-security facility where Mandela was moved in December 1988 from Robben Island and Pollsmoor Prison.
Mandela’s walk to freedom from the gates of Drakenstein Prison on that day became an iconic moment in South Africa’s history, marking the beginning of the country’s transition to democracy.
