Aux premières heures du D-Day, des parachutistes de la 82e division aéroportée américaine furent largués dans la région, certains atterrissant directement au cœur du bourg.

L’un des épisodes les plus marquants concerne John Steele, dont le parachute resta accroché au clocher de l’église. Suspendu dans les airs, il fit le mort pour éviter d’être repéré par les forces allemandes avant de parvenir à s’échapper.
