Detailed itinerary

1

Here you are in Theotokopoulos Square, the true heart of Fira. It is here that all the streets converge, travelers meet and life in the capital of Santorini beats.

2

Here you are in front of a monument that, at first glance, could almost go unnoticed in this small park. But it bears a heavy memory, that of a tragedy of the 20th century long unknown: the genocide of the Pontic Greeks.

3

In Fira and throughout Santorini, gastronomy is an integral part of the travel experience. As soon as you open the door of a traditional tavern, you are greeted by the scents of olive oil, fresh herbs and grilled fish that mix with the sea air.

4

The Archaeological Museum of Thira is in the centre of Fira. It is a small museum, often overshadowed by its more famous neighbor, the prehistoric museum. However, it is worth a visit: it perfectly completes the visit by presenting the history of Santorini from archaic times to the Roman period.

5

Before turning left and climbing the stairs, walk a few metres down the alley in front of you. You will come across the entrance that leads to the Megaro Gyzi Cultural Centre.

6

In front of you stands the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, one of the most singular religious buildings in Fira.

7

On your right, a few hundred meters away, the street takes you straight past one of the most emblematic sites of Santorini: the famous Three Bells of Fira. With their bright blue dome, whitewashed walls and bell towers topped by three bells, they embody the island’s postcard image.

8

You may have seen it before, or at least heard of it: the Fira cable car is one of Santorini’s most iconic means of transport.

9

In front of you lies one of the most spectacular landscapes of Santorini. The caldera reveals itself in all its grandeur, born of a cataclysmic eruption that occurred more than three thousand six hundred years ago. This eruption exploded the island’s core, which collapsed into the sea, giving way to this vast crater now filled with water.

10

The Santozeum is a special place in the cultural landscape of Fira. Perched on the cliffs of the caldera, this amazing building has lived several lives. When it opened in 2011, it first made itself known by exhibiting faithful reproductions of the Minoan frescoes discovered in Akrotiri.

11

You are now in Agiou Mina Street, one of the most picturesque walks in Fira. This alley runs along the cliff and offers spectacular views of the caldera every step of the way. Between the white facades and the flower terraces, sudden openings reveal the Aegean Sea and volcanic islets in the distance.

12

You are in front of the Holy Metropolitan Church of Ypapanti, the great Orthodox cathedral of Fira. Built in 1827, it is dedicated to the Presentation of Christ in the Temple and remains today the religious seat of the island.

Stop 13 Pass by

The Prehistoric Museum of Thira is one of the must-see places in Fira. Inaugurated in 2000, it was built to house the treasures discovered at the archaeological site of Akrotiri, this Bronze Age city often nicknamed "Aegean Pompeii".

14

Welcome to Santorini, one of the most fascinating islands in the Mediterranean. You find yourself on the remains of an ancient civilization and a cataclysm that changed the course of history. More than 3,600 years ago, you wouldn't be admiring this spectacular caldera, because Santorini was then a round and prosperous island called "Kallisté" - "the most beautiful".

15

Here you are in front of the monument to the dead on Dekigala Street, a place of discreet but meaningful memory. He paid tribute to the inhabitants of Fira who had fallen on 23 and 24 April 1944, during the fighting to liberate the city from German occupation.

16

You are here in front of the Fabrica Shopping Center, a special place in Fira. Behind its modern look, it hides an astonishing story: in 1892, it was here that the very first mechanical flour mill was built in Fira.
