Detailed itinerary

1

Located in the South Western part of Mauritius, the spellbinding Tamarind Falls, commonly known as ‘Sept Cascades’ is one of the natural wonders of Mauritius. And there is no better way to explore this green paradisiacal location than through a wonderful trek.

This half-day hike to Tamarind Falls is one the most popular hiking trips on the island, offering an exciting adventure through varied terrains, including inclines, rocky paths, and root-covered trails. Sometimes, you may need to use your hands to steady yourself by grabbing branches, adding to the fun. A bit of fitness helps, but it's all part of the enjoyable challenge

Throughout your trek, you will experience a wonderful connection with nature as you discover 4 of the 7 waterfalls, one after the other. This can be an amazing opportunity to cut off, break away from your daily routine and rejuvenate yourself amid nature.

2

Sometimes the walk will be in the forest and sometimes in an open area on the basalt rocks near the water. You will be stunned by the view from the enthralling waterfall of 40 meters, the marvelous sight of the lush green canyon, and many other captivating features.

Passing behind the spectacular waterfalls is simply a blissful experience, whereby you can see rays of sunlight reflected through the waterfall. The large, refreshing pond at the foot of the waterfall is very much accessible for a pleasant swim. You can also enjoy a natural massage standing under the cascade.

With each fall, you will have the chance to enjoy unique scenery and setting due to its height and flow of water.

3

Mare aux Vacoas is the largest freshwater reservoir in Mauritius, located in the highlands of the Plaines Wilhems district, near Curepipe. Built in 1885 and later expanded, the reservoir plays a vital role in supplying water to a large part of the island. Surrounded by dense forests and cool misty air, Mare aux Vacoas lies at an elevation of about 600 meters above sea level, giving it a tranquil, almost mysterious atmosphere. The area is rich in native vegetation and is also close to other natural attractions such as Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) and the Black River Gorges National Park. Due to its altitude, the region often experiences cooler temperatures and frequent rainfall, which helps replenish the reservoir. While primarily serving as an essential water source, Mare aux Vacoas is also admired for its peaceful landscape, making it a popular stop for nature lovers, photographers, and those seeking a quiet retreat amidst Mauritius’ lush greenery.

4

Also known as Ganga Talao, Grand Bassin is a lake situated 6km SouthEast of Mare aux Vacoas in a secluded mountain area in the district of Savanne, deep in the heart of Mauritius. It is about 1800 feet (550m) above sea level. Grand Bassin with its Hindu temple is a holy lake for Mauritians of the Hindu faith. The lake rests in the crater of an extinct volcano. It is said that the water inside the lake communicates with the waters of the holy Ganges of India. The Hindus of Mauritius declared the Grand Bassin as a Holy lake. The Hindu community performs a pilgrimage every year on the Maha Shivaratri (Shiva’s Great Night), on this day they honour the Lord Shiva. Beside the lake, there is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and other Gods including Hanuman, Lakshmi, and others.

5

The next stop is Alexandra falls which is Situated some 700m above sea level & is one of the most popular nature sites in Mauritius.

You must have definitely seen many of its pictures on postcards or in videos venting the beauty of Mauritius. Alexandra Falls is indeed one of the most emblematic & popular sites of the island. Famous not only for its breathtaking beauty, Alexandra Falls also offers visitors the chance to live a unique experience with nature.

Once you are there, do not miss the chance to admire and capture on your camera the panoramic view of the South-East Coast with its turquoise ocean. If you want to take in the full view, you can climb up a wooden platform.

On your right is the Alexandra Falls. From where you are, the waterfall looks like a silent white stream cascading over the rocky outcrops. You will also have a plunging look on Mauritius’s virgin green valley which is home to many endemic avian species and flora. You will need nothing more to soothe the eye.

6

Next, you'll head to the gorge viewpoint which is the best place to have a panoramic stunning view. Midway between Chamarel and Alexandra falls, stop here for a stunning panorama. The vista point is but a 3-5 minute walk from the road and is really quite spectacular. It is a must-stop location during a road trip from Grand Bassin to Le Morne. Amidst the unspoiled rainforest of Mauritius, there are almost 17,000 acres of rolling hills, deep valleys, spectacular waterfalls, and unparalleled beauty of flora and fauna in the southwestern region.

You’ll be astonished at how elevated the viewing area is above the gorge below. There is a nice waterfall off to your right.

The national park is famous for its array of endemic flora and fauna and the viewpoint ensures you to have an overview of what it is truly made of.

The Black River Gorges National park protects most of the island's remaining rainforest and is home to many species of wild animals and birds.
