The Terai region in the south has a subtropical climate, the mid-hills have a temperate climate, and the Himalayan region has an alpine climate. The country experiences four distinct seasons: spring (March to May), summer (June to August), autumn (September to November), and winter (December to February).

Winter is colder, especially in the mountains, but offers fewer tourists and lower prices. Summer can be hot and humid in the Terai region but is cooler in the mountains. Monsoon rains can affect trekking in the summer.
